Using innovative video technologies to promote pre-service science teachers’ responsiveness
Biology Classroom
We will now enter Dr Bevan’s biology classroom. The video clips concern the teaching of the unit Enzyme. This class comprises 19 grade 10 students. Let’s look at how we positioned the cameras (Figure 3).
Figure 3: Video camera positions and layout of Dr Bevan’s biology classroom
Apart from a static camera placed at the back of the classroom, we used a head-mounted GoPro camera to capture the teacher’s first-person point-of-view (T-POV) footage. This allowed us to ‘see’ the classroom from the teacher perspective.
Let’s get a sense of the classroom environment by watching the following panoramic footage. Use your mobile phone to scan the QR code below. You will need to use a Google Cardboard or a virtual reality headset. You can refer to this video for procedures for using a Google Cardboard.

What did you notice in this video clip?
-
What do you feel when you first enter Dr Beavan’s classroom?
The video clip you have just watched captures how Dr Bevan started the unit Enzyme. She had set a number of learning outcomes for her students to achieve (see this document). The students were asked to self-assess whether they could achieve these intended outcomes at the end of the unit. You can revisit the non-panoramic version of this clip below.
In the clip, the teacher first showed students her own version of the lyrics of the song (‘Shape of You’ by Ed Sheeran) on the PPT slide. She told the students that they would be asked to see the relevance of the lyrics to important ideas about enzymes and metabolism and to analyse the lyrics at the end of the unit.
Some video clips illustrating how the unit is unfolded will be shown. These episodes are:
